“Love what you do and it will never feel like work.”
Have you heard this phrase before?
I’ve heard this countless times in college, like it was the only advice I would ever need.
I think it can be a little discouraging and maybe a little guilt-inducing for those of us who do love what we do, yet still feel wiped by the end of the day. I think it’s completely normal to love your job, but still think that it’s hard work.
But, what about the rest of the people, who don’t love their job and just live for the weekend? Research is consistently giving us insights into the reality of today’s working world.
The Gallup organization reminds us every couple of years that nearly 70% of employees are actively disengaged.
A Harvard Business Review Survey reveals 58% of people say they trust strangers more than they trust their own boss.
Global studies reveal that 79% of people who quit their job cite “lack of appreciation” as their reason for leaving. Recognition and purpose are two things managers could give their employees to inspire them to produce great work. Global studies prove that when it comes to inspiring people to be their best at work, nothing else comes close, not even higher pay, promotion, autonomy or training. When you constantly recognize your employees, and remind them often of the purpose in their work, you gain their loyalty, which is one of the most important things for a successful company.
The Conference Board reports that 53% of Americans are currently unhappy at work. Consider that for a second. Half of the workforce is unhappy. That is sad.
Finding a career that makes us feel happy and satisfied is not easy. It’s not something they teach us in school, which makes the journey that much harder.
Work defines us as people, and when we are not happy at work other areas of our life get affected.
I have worked with hundreds of people on their career challenges, and have heard about people who end up sick, depressed, divorced, abusing substances, etc, because they are unhappy with their career.
You should not have to feel this way!
I believe employees can do a lot of things to increase their engagement, such as identifying their strengths and finding work that most aligns with their core values and beliefs.
